Film score and sound design for documentary '40 Wochen – Von der Keimzelle zum Kind'

40 Wochen - Von der Keimzelle zum Kind 40 Wochen - Von der Keimzelle zum Kind

Currently, on average, just about four children come into this world every single second. This corresponds to the incredible number of over 130 million births annually worldwide. As natural and inevitable as it is that our existence depends on Birth, the whole complex process required for the emergence of each human life as it goes through its various stages of development is just that much more amazing.

This development from conception through birth is what director Dirk Neumann spotlights in his film for SWR as he follows an expectant mother throughout her pregnancy. The processes in the interior of the body are illustrated by numerous, evocative computer animations and, on the tonal level, a corresponding sound design makes them audible.

The score is more or less divided into two parts, namely, that of the film's animated inner world and that of its external reality sequences. For scenes of the real world we hear, for example, a bright and cheerful kids melody in different instrumentations, such as piano, strings, guitar, xylophone, bass and drums, or we have orchestral music with a subsequent lullaby. For the animated sequences the music is kept all electronic and provides atmospheric ambient cues to the amazing processes happening inside the body.

The film score wins at 10th Park City Film Music Festival in Utah, USA the „Gold Medal / Jury Choice“ in the Category „Best Impact of Music for a Documentary Film".
